TEACHING OF READING
Early reading involves the children learning a range of stories by heart and having lots of books read to them.
Read Write Inc is used to teach the children phonics, which is used alongside sight vocabulary to teach the children to read.
Read Write Inc is crucial to the early development of reading and we use a range of RWI books with the children. In Key Stage 1 and 2 the children also use Oxford Reading Tree books. Once the children are proficient readers they move onto paperbacks – these include Oxford Reading Tree books, books from other schemes and books from class/school library.
All of the children in KS2 participate daily in the ‘Accelerated Reading Programme’. Each morning there is a dedicated reading time. Children record the books they are reading or have read on-line and on completion they take a quiz which allows them to accumulate points. This is proving to be a great motivational tool to get all of our children reading regularly and the programme provides both staff and pupils with valuable data regarding their reading level and progress.
