YEAR 5

Mrs Wright, Mrs Etherington and Mrs Jobling
YEAR 5

Autumn Term 2018

Welcome back Year5! We hope you’ve had a lovely summer and are returning to school ready to LEARN!

Our topic this term is Victorian Britain. We are planning a trip to Cragside to support our learning, experiencing what life was like in the 1800’s.

In English, our class novel is ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty, where we will follow the life of Jim, a victorian street child struggling to survive life in the workhouse. Lots of our reading, writing and grammar work will be based on this novel.

In Science, we are learning about ‘All living things and their habitats’.

In Maths our number work will include; place value, additional and subtraction of larger numbers, multiplication and division including decimals and fractions. The measuring objectives will include 24 hour clock, lengths, perimeters and measuring angles.

P.E. Days
Y5 WE – Monday and Thursday
Y5 SJ – Tuesday and Friday
Please make sure PE kits come into school on a Monday and go home on a Friday, as we sometimes have special events which require them to wear kits on other days.

Spellings and Reading Books – Weekly spellings are sent home on a Thursday and will be tested on the following Monday. Spelling homework sheets should be completed and returned to school – raffle tickets are handed out to those who do. Reading books should be brought in every day.

Educational visits – During this academic year we have two educational visits planned. We are aware of the cost implications, as one of the visits is a residential, therefore we are putting in place a method of paying in installments. More information will follow soon.

Any questions, concerns or worries, please contact one of the Year 5 team.

Thank you
