YEAR 5

Mrs Barnes and Mr Telford

Spring Term 2018

Welcome back! We hope you’ve all had a great Christmas break and managed to avoid all the colds and flu!

Year 5 have got straight into their lessons and enjoyed learning about the language of advertising and designing their own brochure for a theme park, using this language. We are now looking at persuasive writing in letters, articles etc.

The children are doing well in their reading and we are grateful for your support in encouraging them to read at home.

In Maths, we have continued to secure the children’s knowledge of decimals and fractions. This week, we have been testing on the Y5 Bronze level for Maths.

Our topic this term is Ancient Greece and so far we have looked at the Geography of Greece. We look forward to finding out abut Greek Gods and Goddesses, Greek Myths, Athens and Sparta, daily life in Ancient Greece and will be creating some Greek masks, pots, helmets and shields in Art.

We also hope to tie in some cookery lessons with this topic. Look out for the Creative Homework to go with this topic.

In Science, we are looking further at the properties of materials and changing the state of material.

We have several tournaments coming coming up this term in Basketball and Hockey and the children are currently receiving coaching from Newcastle Eagles.

We also have a few transition activities arranged with Joseph Swan, beginning with a Spelling Bee this Friday, where 8 of our Year 5 children will complete against the other primary schools in the cluster.

We are looking forward to our residential field visit to Malham in May, which will soon be upon us.

If you have any queries about this or anything else please contact  Mr. Telford or Mrs. Barnes.
