YEAR 5

Spring Term 2019

Happy New Year everyone. We hope you all had a lovely Christmas break.

The Spring term brings some exciting opportunities with our residential trip to Malham, happening on the 1st April. Information will be coming out soon, inviting parents/carers to a pre-visit meeting.

During this term we will be focusing on:

English – narrative writing, .S.P.A.G. focus and spelling rules. We will also be spending two weeks working on our whole school book ‘The Matchbox Diary’.

Maths  – further practise of place value, mental methods and written methods, along with problem solving, reasoning and algebra. We will also delve deeper into decimals, fractions and percentages and take on some new concepts including geometry and statistics. We will also do weekly and daily assessments of multiplication and division facts – so make the most of Times Tables Rockstars. We recommend 10-20 minutes every day or as much as you can.

Science – We will be learning about properties and changes of materials and will looks at solids, liquids and gasses, as well as the water cycle.

Topic – we will be focusing on our trip to Malham, looking at maps and learning about geographical features and map symbols, and comparing Malham with Gateshead.

M.F.L. – we are excited to be learning ‘Italiano’ this year with Signore De Felice.

P.E. – Newcastle Eagles are providing us with some top level basketball coaching. In other P.E. lessons we will be developing attacking and defensive skills to transfer across basketball and hockey.

Y5 Football Team did us proud!

The Year 5 boys football team did us proud! They were one of the youngest teams to enter the under 11 tournament, which was held at Gateshead Stadium, on Thursday afternoon.  Winning the first game put us in a good position; we lost some games in the middle but...

Football update

The winter league has now finished and the team performed well in their matches.  They came a creditable 3rd in their league.  There is a year 5 football tournament coming up on the 22nd November and the girls competition is still waiting for a rearranged date.

Glynwood Choir sing their hearts out!

Glynwood Choir put on a wonderful performance at St Mary's Cathedral, singing with passion and enthusiasm in front of an audience of 400! The show was arranged by Felling Male Voice Choir, and also included singing from St Peter's Primary School and the Swing Bridge...
