YEAR 5

Mrs Barnes

Spring Term 2017

Welcome back Year 5 and a Happy New Year!

The children got off to a great start last week, working hard on formal methods of multiplication and problem-solving in Maths. We are going to be doing lots of work on fractions and decimals this term, too.

Last week, the children continued their study of persuasive writing by writing a letter from Mrs. Ryan to parents asking them to remove T.V.s and games consoles from their children’s bedrooms!! Their arguments were very persuasive!

This week, we are reading and looking at some poetry and then we will start to read another class novel, as they really enjoyed ‘Street Child’ last term. I am really pleased with their commitment to Accelerated Reader and Guided Reading too.

Our Science topic this term is Properties of Materials and Changing State and we hope to do lots of investigations.

In Topic, we are studying the period of Ancient Greece, a popular topic for children. We will be making some Greek masks.

There are lots of sports tournaments coming up, particularly in Netball and Basketball and we are lucky to have Newcastle Eagles in each Friday this term for coaching!

Finally, I would like to thank all of you who attended the Carol Service at St. John’s Church on the last day of term. I am sure you will have been as proud of your children as we were. They sang and read beautifully!
