YEAR 4Mrs Barnes and Miss Barrass
Summer Term 2019
Welcome back to the final term of Year 4. We hope everyone enjoyed the sunny weather during the Easter holidays and are well rested and ready for the challenges ahead.
This term we will be getting to grips with Roald Dhal’s Revolting Rhymes and hopefully producing some revolting rhymes of our own.
We will be continuing our focus on the times tables this term, as the children will be taking part in a National Multiplication Check. We would really welcome any support you can give your child with learning and revising all the tables (1-12). We have asked them the practise every night.
Our topic this term is the Romans. We hope to visit Housesteads and find out more about the Roman lifestyle. We will also be planning some exciting ‘creative homework’ for the children to enjoy at home later in the term.
In Science, we will be finding out about ‘electricity’ and trying different ways of making currents.
Year 4 no longer have swimming lessons on a Monday, but instead have the exciting opportunity of training with a Newcastle Eagles coach. We will also have Athletics on a Thursday in preparation for Sports Day, Glynwood Games and the Athletics Festival at Gateshead Stadium.
Please ensure your child continues to learn spellings, which are taken home on Thursdays and tested the following Thursday. In addition, whilst the children make good progress in their reading, they always benefit from reading at home independently and being heard read regularly. Reading books go home every night and should be brought in to school every day for ‘Accelerated Reading’.
As always if you have any queries or concerns, please don’t hesitate to speak to a member of the team.
Thank you for your continued support.

Our Science topic in Year 4 is Living Things and Their Habitats. We had an afternoon looking for minibeasts in the school garden. We had to look at those we found really closely, draw, describe and identify them. (We put them back exactly where we found them)
Both Year 4 classes have been learning to play the trumpet since September. They are all now able to produce a nice sound, and are learning how to change the pitch using the valves of the trumpet and by adjusting their lips on the mouthpiece. The children are also...
The parents and friends of Glynwood put on a fantastic party for Halloween for all the Key Stage 2 pupils. The costumes of adults and children were amazing and far too scary for my liking! All the children were well behaved and the grown ups helped to make a really...

From rapping to rockin' & rollin' the year 4's did a fantastic job at their Harvest Festival. Photographs taken by a Y4 pupil.
The whole of key stage 1 and 2 took part in the first house event of the year - the awesome cross country course!. All the competitors did a fantastic job completing the course and this year's winners were the amazing Swan house. Well done everyone!
Children across school had a fantastic afternoon with what has become an annual and very popular tradition, the Glynwood water fight! Great fun had by everyone, adults as well as the children.
Both year 4 classes enjoyed being out of the classroom on empty classroom day. Here are some pics showing you their colourful scavenger hunt in the garden, and their fantastic natural artwork. What a great day! 🙂
We've had a fantastic science week! We have learned so much about sound by doing lots of fun practical activities and investigations. We are now sound experts!!! We've also loved working with our visitors; Mr Gates from Joseph Swan and Technology Tom, who showed us...
