YEAR 4

Mrs Overman and Miss Mordey

Autumn Term 2017

Welcome back! We hope you had a great summer and that the children are all excited about starting their new year and are eager to learn. We have lots of exciting things ahead of us this year starting with this half term.

During this half term we will be basing our English work around Quentin Blake’s story, “The Green Ship”. We will be using our imaginations to develop our descriptive language and story writing skills.

In Maths we will be starting with the Year 4 Maths objective focusing on: understanding number, calculations and measurements. Most weeks we will issue Abacus online homework tasks, which are a combination of learning games and activities to support your child’s understanding to consolidate objectives covered in class. (Login/advice letters have been given to your child, if you do experience problems please speak to one of the Year 4 staff A.S.A.P.).

Our topic this half term is all about Northumberland. We will explore and discover the geography and history of Northumberland. We are currently organising a visit to support this topic. Information will be sent out soon.

Our first Science topic in Year 4 is: “Living things and their habitats”. We will be investigating various habitats and the plants and animals that live there. We will also be looking at food chains and creating our own.

As well as swimming lessons on every Monday, the children will be keeping active with another weekly PE lesson. This half term we will be focusing on developing ball skills across a range of sports.

Some reminders:
* Homework – spellings and Abacus online/worksheet homework, will be set every Thursday to be completed and handed in by the following Wednesday.
* Spelling test will be held in class on a Wednesday morning.
* PE kits brought to school on a Monday and taken home on a Friday.
* Remember swimming kits every Monday.
* Accelerated Reader books and green reading records should be brought into school
every day.

In year 4, we like to encourage the children to become more independent and responsible for themselves. Thank you for the taking the time to read this, if you have questions for us please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any of the year 4 team. Mrs Overman, Miss Mordey, Mrs Webber & Ms Ali.
