YEAR 3

Mrs Wright, Mrs Etherington and Miss Robinson

Autumn Term 2017

Welcome to Year 3! The children are settling in really well and we are all very pleased with them! We welcome new staff to Year 3; Miss Robinson as a new teacher to Glynwood and Mrs Warn as Teaching Assistant in the class of Mrs Wright and Mrs Etherington.

Our first topic is about Newcastle and Gateshead Quayside which covers some of the local history themes as well as Geography. We will visit Castle Keep and other Quayside landmarks during this term.

In Science, Rocks and Soils is our new topic. Already, some of the children are enjoying bringing in some of their collections to share and are loving finding out how rocks are formed.

PE days are TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY. Please encourage your child to bring their PE kit on a Monday and leave it in school until Friday, when it can be taken home to be washed.

We start a reading programme in Year 3 called Accelerated Reader which continues throughout Key Stage 2. It has proven results in encouraging children to read more and has hugely increased reading ages in many children as well as comprehension skills. The children will complete on-line quizzes once they have completed each book. Please support your child by asking them questions about what they have read as well as hearing them read.

Homework will take the form of spellings each week (given on a Thursday to learn for a test the following Wednesday), Abacus maths, which will regularly be allocated for the children to do on-line and creative homework around the topic we are studying.

Both classes have a teddy bear which will be given to ‘Star of the Week’ to take home for a week as a reward. Please encourage your child to write something about the time ‘Snuggles’ or ‘Mr Pickles’ has spent at your house. Photos aren’t essential, but a lovely addition should you wish.

We hope your child will be very happy in Year 3. You are always welcome to talk to us about any issues you may have; please don’t hesitate to ask.

Year 3 team.
