YEAR 1Mrs Allom, Mrs Commons and Mr Lyon
Autumn Term 2019
A big warm welcome back to Year 1. We hope you all had a wonderful summer.
Our Autumn Term begins with the topic ‘Our Local Area’. We will look at buildings and houses and how they have changed over the years. We will have a walk out to see what we can see.
Our Science work will be materials and we will be looking at what things are made of and their properties.
Maths will be a combination of number work, adding and taking away, shape and measuring.
There will be lots of phonics work going on in our Read Write Inc lessons, as well as lots of games in class. We will also have English lessons and will begin with work on fairy tales. If you have any, we would love to read them in class.
We look forward to working with you and your children. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to come and speak to us.
We have had a lovely afternoon decorating biscuits with icing and all kinds of decorations. Mmmm.
This morning saw the annual Christmas Quiz take place and as usual it was a closely fought contest. This year's champion quizzers were Darling house. Well done to all the children and teachers for their artistic talent, singing skills and of course their totally...
In Science this term we have been investigating materials. We have been investigating which materials float or sink. We thought about how we could investigate the materials. We made sensible predictions, observed what happened and thought carefully about our...
Year 1 did a fabulous job of their nativity performance this week. Well done to all our budding actors and wonderful singers.
We have all had a lovely day wearing our Christmas jumpers and enjoying our Christmas lunches which were delicious.
Pudsey came to visit us this morning and we all got very excited. All money raised today from wearing pyjamas is being sent to charity, split between children in need and Diabetes UK.
We had great fun at our halloween disco and our costumes were all fantastic.
As part of our mental health awareness day we talked about making and doing things for others to make them feel good and special. We had a go at doing some peer massage on each other and it made us feel very happy and relaxed. We might do it again another time.
Year 1 did a fab experiment in science. They were given a bear encased in ice and told to get the bear out. After lots of chipping away, we discovered that heat and melting the ice was the best way.
We we had a wonderful day at Beamish comparing our houses to those from a long time ago. We made lavender bags, oatcakes in the house, had a ride on a tram and even tried old fashioned sweets from the sweety shop.
We enjoyed going on a walk this afternoon and looking for different styles of houses. We found lots. We even found time for a quick visit to the park too. What a great afternoon.
In Science this afternoon the children had a go at using different materials straw, sticks and stones to build houses. We then tested them to see which would be the strongest. We had great fun.
